About IE(I) Kolkata

The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI] is a statutory body to promote and advance the engineering and technology, established in 1920 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935. It is the largest multi-disciplinary professional body of engineers encompassing 15 (fifteen) engineering disciplines with a Corporate membership of over 2 lakhs, and serving the nation for more than 10 decades. The IEI has its headquarters located in Kolkata with national presence through more than hundred Centres and several Overseas Chapters, Foras and Organ.

The Institution was granted Royal Charter On September 9, 1935 by his Majesty the King and Emperor George V, which was a momentous event in the annals of Engineering Industry and education in India. The Royal Charter endowed the Institution with the responsibility to promote the general advancement of engineering amongst members and persons attached to the Institution. IEI has been recognized as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India and besides conducting its own research, provides Grant-in-Aid to UG/PG/ PhD students of Engineering Institutes & Universities.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is a first professional body to represent India in several International Bodies, such as the World Mining Congress (WMC), the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), the Federation International du Beton (fib), and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA). It also has bilateral agreements with a number of professional societies across the globe. IEI holds the International Professional Engineers (Int PE) Register for India under the global International Professional Engineers Alliance (Int PEA). The Institution also award the Professional Engineers (PE) Certification.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is a pioneer body to introduce, starting from 1928, continuing engineering education programme, successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to a degree in engineering by the Government of India, the Union Public Service Commission, the State Governments and many Public / Private Sector organizations in the country. The Institution of Engineers (India), with its headquarters in Kolkata, India, is administered by a National Council with the President of IEI as its Head.

Ever since its inception, IEI has been the forerunner in setting up national standards for promoting the country’s industrial base which culminated on the formation of the Indian Standard Institution (ISI), now called as Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). IEI, in collaboration with Springer, regularly publishes peer-reviewed international journal in five series, covering fifteen engineering disciplines.

About IE(I) Coimbatore Local Centre

The IE(I), Coimbatore Local Centre has been one of the active centres of The Institution of Engineers (India) which is engaged in successfully translating the objectives and ethics of IE(I) into practices. The Centre was founded in the year of 1965, under the Chairmanship of Dr G R Damodaran, an educationist, the former Vice - Chancellor of Madras University, a philanthropist and also the architect of PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore who lived for the technology development of the Nation. For more than five decades, the IE(I), Coimbatore Local Centre (CLC) has contributed a lot to the engineering community and to the society as a whole.

Presently, IE(I), CLC has a strength of 3,024 corporate members, 6,240 student members and 18 institutional members. It regularly organizes technical and special lectures in the fields of engineering / management / present scenario in engineering industries / topics of special interest. Industrial visits are also been arranged to promote good technical interaction among the members and industries. It also observes the international / national events like World Water Day, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, World Environment Day and Engineers Day and other IE(I) statutory days in a fitting manner by organizing technical talks on the selected themes with experts in field.

One Day Seminar / Workshop, All India Seminar / Workshop funded by the IE(I), Headquarters, Kolkata are also being organized through the Local Centre under different engineering divisions in association with various institutions. A few National Conventions of IE(I) were also arranged by the Centre.

The audited annual accounts, quarterly and annual reports of the Centre are being properly submitted to the IE(I), Headquarters on time. The Annual General Meeting (AGM) and monthly committee meetings are being held in an organized manner. The Centre acts as an important examination centre in the region conducting AMIE section A & B examinations during summer and winter sessions.

The Centre has many students’ chapters which are active under different engineering divisions in various institutions in and around Coimbatore. Every year, outstanding engineers, young achievers are honored by the Coimbatore Local Centre. Student scholarships are also distributed from various endowment contributions. The Centre houses a library with about 1900 text books / references for the benefit of members. Guidance classes are also being conducted to help associate and student members.

Golden jubilee of the Coimbatore Local Centre was celebrated in the year 2015 - 2016 with the inauguration of Centre’s own building, “PSG - GRD Bhavan”.

Rotary eClub of Coimbatore Changemakers honored our The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre with “Changemaker of Coimbatore Award for the year 2022 - 2023”.

The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre has been adjudged the “Best Local Centre” based on all-round performance during the year 2022 - 2023. Our centre has received the Best Local Centre Award also in 2019 - 2020.
