About IE(I) Kolkata

The Institution of Engineers (India) [IEI] is a statutory body to promote and advance the engineering and technology, established in 1920 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1935. It is the largest multi-disciplinary professional body of engineers encompassing 15 (fifteen) engineering disciplines with a Corporate membership of over 2 lakhs, and serving the nation for more than 10 decades. The IEI has its headquarters located in Kolkata with national presence through more than hundred Centres and several Overseas Chapters, Foras and Organ.

The Institution was granted Royal Charter On September 9, 1935 by his Majesty the King and Emperor George V, which was a momentous event in the annals of Engineering Industry and education in India. The Royal Charter endowed the Institution with the responsibility to promote the general advancement of engineering amongst members and persons attached to the Institution. IEI has been recognized as Scientific and Industrial Research Organization by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt. of India and besides conducting its own research, provides Grant-in-Aid to UG/PG/ PhD students of Engineering Institutes & Universities.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is a first professional body to represent India in several International Bodies, such as the World Mining Congress (WMC), the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), the Commonwealth Engineers’ Council (CEC), the Federation International du Beton (fib), and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA). It also has bilateral agreements with a number of professional societies across the globe. IEI holds the International Professional Engineers (Int PE) Register for India under the global International Professional Engineers Alliance (Int PEA). The Institution also award the Professional Engineers (PE) Certification.

The Institution of Engineers (India) is a pioneer body to introduce, starting from 1928, continuing engineering education programme, successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to a degree in engineering by the Government of India, the Union Public Service Commission, the State Governments and many Public / Private Sector organizations in the country. The Institution of Engineers (India), with its headquarters in Kolkata, India, is administered by a National Council with the President of IEI as its Head.

Ever since its inception, IEI has been the forerunner in setting up national standards for promoting the country’s industrial base which culminated on the formation of the Indian Standard Institution (ISI), now called as Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). IEI, in collaboration with Springer, regularly publishes peer-reviewed international journal in five series, covering fifteen engineering disciplines.

About IE(I) Coimbatore Local Centre

The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre was established in the year 1965. The registered headquarters of The Institution of Engineers (India) is situated at Kolkata. Presently, the IE(I) Coimbatore Local Centre is functioning from its office located at the PSG College of Technology Campus, Peelamedu, Coimbatore - 641004. The main objective of the Centre is to promote engineering education and professional development through seminars, workshops, technical lectures, and other technical activities for IE(I) members, students, faculty members, research scholars, and industry professionals. The Centre receives various grants from IE(I) Headquarters for organizing different technical activities and programmes.

IE(I) Coimbatore Local Centre, operating from the PSG College of Technology campus, has been actively serving the engineering fraternity for nearly 60 years. The Centre has been one of the most active Local Centres of The Institution of Engineers (India), successfully translating the objectives and ethics of IE(I) into practice.

Presently, the Centre has a strength of more than 3,000 corporate members, more than 6,000 student members, and 22 institutional members. It regularly organizes technical and special lectures in various fields of engineering. Industrial visits are also arranged to promote technical interaction among members and industries.

The Centre observes various international and national events such as World Water Day, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, World Environment Day, Engineers Day, and other IE(I) statutory days by organizing technical talks delivered by experts in the respective fields.

One Day Seminars, Workshops, and All India Seminars funded by IE(I) Headquarters, Kolkata are regularly organized under various engineering divisions in association with engineering institutions. The Centre has also successfully organized several National Conventions of IE(I).

The audited annual accounts, quarterly reports, and annual reports of the Centre are submitted regularly and on time to IE(I) Headquarters. Monthly Committee Meetings and Annual General Meetings (AGMs) are conducted in an organized manner.

The Centre served as an important examination centre in the region for many years by conducting AMIE Section A & B examinations during summer and winter sessions. It also has several active Students' Chapters functioning under different engineering divisions in various institutions in and around Coimbatore.

Every year, outstanding engineers and young achievers are honoured by the Coimbatore Local Centre. Student scholarships are distributed through various endowment contributions. The Centre also houses a library with about 1,900 text and reference books and conducts guidance classes for associate and student members.

The Golden Jubilee of the IE(I), Coimbatore Local Centre was celebrated during 2015–2016 along with the inauguration of its own building, "PSG-GRD Bhavan".

Rotary eClub of Coimbatore Changemakers honoured IE(I), Coimbatore Local Centre with the "Changemaker of Coimbatore Award" for the year 2022–2023.

Recently, IE(I) Coimbatore Local Centre was adjudged the "Best Local Centre" for its all-round performance during the year 2024–2025. The Centre had also received this prestigious recognition earlier for the years 2019–2020, 2022–2023, and 2023–2024.

The Institution of Engineers (India), Coimbatore Local Centre celebrated its Diamond Jubilee during the year 2025–2026, marking 60 years of dedicated service to the engineering fraternity and the technical community.
